This ad for the "Dog Whisperer" confuses me a bit.

(click, via)
Is "Daisy" supposed to be a gay male dog? Or a butch gay female dog? Or... maybe he/she is somewhere in the pre- post-op stages? I ask, because "Daisy" doesn't seem to have the right equipment. Is it under his leg? Photoshopped out? Thoughts?
Ad agency: Ireland Davenport, Johannesburg. Previous cute dog ads: onetwothree.

A 5th grader would know what's going on here. Are you smarter than a 5th grader? No. The dog's roles have been reversed. Female dog, outside, looks butch, while the male dog, inside the doghouse, is now Daisy. "Big" (quotation marks quite necessary) mystery solved.

There's a dog inside the doghouse?

If you say so.

Yeah. I have X ray vision. You have a better explanation, Watson? If you don't, shut up.

Gay male dog- photoshopped appendage to avoid offending your cute American sensitivities. No nipples either...

It's the juxtaposition between the spiked collar and the pink flowery dog house. The dog isn't gay, she's just confused about where she fits in and what her identity is.

Or its just a crappy ad.

My first impression was that the dog's owners are inflicting psychological trauma on her by giving her conflicting information about who they want her to be. Is she rainbows-and-butterflies, or is she a spiked collar kind of girl? Dogs need their owners' expectations to be clear.

I'd guess that the dog is simply experiencing an identity crisis, so NO there is not another dog in the doghouse, you dickhead. It's a stupid ad.

either way, it's really just not that good of an ad.

I think Lexi's probably nailed the agency's intent here. The fact that we need to guess what it all means could be an argument for this being a really awful ad (unintentionally confusing) or really brilliant (intentionally confusing, to stoke debate).

I'm going with really awful. I don't think the creators were nearly that smart.

Looks like a photoshopped male dog. Clearly the ad makers thought our sensitivities too delicate to see dog 'parts' so the spiked collar is supposed to cue the assumption 'male'. Interesting you don't run into many women who wear spiked collars, but yet the collar alone isn't enough to rule out 'female'. Why is that? It ends up looking like a butch female who just doesn't like all that pink flowery crap. But gender-neutral bull terrier wouldn't get in a dog house anyway, everybody knows they prefer the sofa.

I think the dog collar and the dog house a mere distractions.

the dog's real issues is that it is in suburbia in what seems to be a wonderful day, when it would rather be running around in on the beach (or a field full of poppies).

I can empathise with the ad... I'm in an office working (allegedly) when I would much rather be outside playing... maybe I have issues too... maybe i should watch the show too... DAMN YOU ADVERTISING, YOU'RE TOO GOOD!!!

It's a girl dog. Her owners, like many parents, have assumed she'll be girly and into pink and butterflies, but that's not who she is....because she's a BULL (Terrier)....get it? Substitute the word that sometimes goes after "bull" when describing someone who'd be a bit butch and wear a studded collar...(although it wouldn't really be a studded collar. Daisy should be wearing work boots and a flannel shirt.)

I saw it as a male English bull terrier, traditionally a butch, masculine dog (despite shopped-out parts), who's being psychologically traumatized because his owners insist on treating him as an effeminate lady dog.

Also, Anonymous #1 is a dickhead, in case we hadn't settled that yet.

I am not the one who's been working in the industry for 2 decades and is about to retire, and is, as usual, confused by an ad.

Bull terriers are rad, friendly dogs, but people don't normally put them in the cute and frilly category- hence the implied "identity crisis" issue

Unlike humans, scientists have determined that dogs see the world in black, white, and shades of gray, with long wavelength (red-yellow) and short wavelength (blue) colors thrown in.

Daisy's main issue, I'm guessing, is 'ocular migraines,' brought on by the outrageous 'Glamour Pink' paint colour.

In humans, these temporary visual disturbances are usually painless and self-resolve within 20 to 30 minutes, but they can include disturbances of hearing, speech or smell; progressive numbness or tingling in the face or arms or legs; or generalized weakness.

Oh! the spiked leather stud collar doesn't help Daisy much with the gender issue, here's one that would be more suitable for her.

I think it's meant to be a parallel to teenage rebellion, not necessarily sexual identity. The dog represtents a teenaged girl; the flowery "Daisy" doghouse, her pre-teenage bedroom; and the spiked collar, her teenage wardrobe. Her parents raised her to be sweet, innocent, and girly, but now that she's a teenager, she's a sullen, rebellious punk.

That's the best I can do. It's terribly strained, and it's kind of a metaphor for a metaphor (or something), but I think that's what they're going for.

It looks like a female dog who likes her spiked collar but doesn't like the pink rainbow flowery house. I don't understand where you anything "gay" from it. Break free from your stereotypes.
